Second Sight/First Viewing; 2003

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

Since I was 15 I completely idolized and adored Danny Buraczeski and JAZZDANCE. I love attending all different styles and genres of dance, but when I saw JAZZDANCE for the first time at O’shaugnessy I fell completely in love with jazz and all the possibilities within this incredible style of dance.

In the early winter of 2002 we were honored to have Danny Buraczeski attend one of our rehearsals to give us feedback on a new piece I was creating. At that rehearsal he invited us to be a part of Second Sight/First Viewing at the Illusion Theatre. We tried to coolly and calmly accept and as he left our rehearsal immediately erupted in cheers. One of my most cherished memories.

EEE's "Fragile Dreams" MN Fringe Festival 2002

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

This season marks Eclectic Edge Ensemble’s 10th season. I can not believe it! As we are busy rehearsing and working on our 10th Anniversary Concert I wanted to take time to look over EEE’s 10 year history. We have been so blessed to work with such incredible dancers, choreographers, directors, composers, musicians, designers and artists. It has been a blast watching old videos to see where EEE started to where we are now. Filled with gratitude for every single step we have taken.

In preparation for our Anniversary Concert we are making compilations of EEE’s past productions. Tune in every few days to catch a new video and post.

Since I was a young girl producing shows for my stuffed animals I knew that some day I wanted to create and direct a dance company. In 2002, after I graduated from the U of MN, I applied for the MN Fringe Festival and got in! On the application they asked for a company’s name, and there in my parents’ living room Eclectic Edge Ensemble was born. Our first production Fragile Dreams was inspired by two Salvador Dali paintings.

Support the Arts - Support Strong Business Communities

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

With the EEE fundraiser only weeks away, it is important to remember why we need to support the arts in our neighborhoods. I want to share a very good article I came across at The Americans for the Arts blog, ARTSblog by Randy Cohen titled "The Top 10 Reasons to Support the Arts (from Arts Watch)."

Reason #10: "True Prosperity...The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us—fostering creativity, goodness, and beauty...."

Reason #9: "Stronger communitiesUniversity of Pennsylvania researchers havCowe demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement, more social cohesion, higher child welfare, and lower poverty rates...."

Reason #8: "Health and well-beingnearly one-half of the nation’s healthcare institutions provide arts programming for patients, families, and even staff...."

Reason #7: "21st Century workforce...creativity is among the top applied skills sought by employers. 72 percent of business leaders say creativity is of high importance when hiring. The biggest creativity indicator? A college arts degree...."

Reason #6: "Improved academic performancelongitudinal data of 25,000 students demonstrate that students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test scores, lower drop-out rates, and even better attitudes about community service...."

Reason #5: "Arts in the schools = better SAT scoresstudents with four years of arts or music in high school average 100 points better on their SAT scores than students with one-half year or less...."

Reason #4: "Creative Industries…the creative industries are arts businesses that range from nonprofit museums, symphonies, and theaters to for-profit film, architecture, and advertising companies...."

Reason #3: "Arts are the cornerstone of tourismarts travelers are ideal tourists—they stay longer and spend more...."

Reason #2:"Arts are good for local merchants…the typical arts attendee spends $27.79 per person, per event, not including the cost of admission on items such as meals, parking, shopping, and babysitters...."

Reason #1: " The arts are an Industryarts organizations are responsible businesses, employers, and consumers.  They spend money locally, generate government revenue, and are a cornerstone of tourism and economic development. Nonprofit arts organizations generate $166 billion in economic activity annually, supporting 5.7 million jobs and generating nearly $30 billion in government revenue. Investment in the arts supports jobs, generates tax revenues, and advances our creativity-based economy...."

I Praise the dance

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

I praise the dance,

for it frees people from the heaviness of matter

and binds the isolated to community.

I praise the dance, which demands everything:

health and a clear spirit and a buoyant soul.

Dance is a transformation of space, of time, of people,

who are in constant danger of becoming all brain,

will, or feeling.

Dancing demands a whole person,

one who is firmly anchored in the center of his life,

who is not obsessed by lust for people and things

and the demon of isolation in his own ego.

Dancing demands a freed person,

one who vibrates with the equipoise of all his powers.

I praise the dance.

O man, learn to dance,

or else the angels in heaven will not know

what to do with you.

- Saint Augustine

The Cold Song

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

I don't know about you, but I definitely do a little "cold dance" as I make my way to the car in sub-degree temperatures. This beautiful piece by the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet in New York City is slightly different from my little dance, but breathtaking all the same. Enjoy.

Choreography by Benoit-Swan Pouffer. Music: The Cold Song by Klaus Nomi.

New Year's Resolutions

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

How many of us have declared, whole-heartedly and with unwavering conviction, that "this year will be the year to...." (fill in the blank)?  And how many times have we filled in the blank with "eat healthy" and "excercise"?  Many, I'm sure of it.  We, as dancers, certainly understand the importance of keeping in shape.  Lucky for us, keeping in shape doesn't feel like "work" because we have been fortunate enough to find an activity that, not only keeps our bodies healthy, but keeps our souls smiling too.  If you are one of the many, MANY folks who have committed to a more active lifestyle for the new year, some food for thought: exercise doesn't have to be a chore.  It can be fun; it can be informal; it can be something you're HORRIBLE at, but love to do: so long as it makes you smile, you'll be well on your way to healthier mind and body.  We love what we do: you should too!

Eclectic Edge Ensemble is filled with Gratitude for their 2012!

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

What an incredible year it has been for EEE! We are filled with so much gratitude, and excitement for all of the joys and gifts that lay ahead of us for 2013! Running a dance company has been a dream of mine since I was 5 years old and I would put on shows for my stuffed animals. I have to pinch myself every day that I get to do what I have always wanted, and with a team of dancers that are so dedicated, hard-working, talented and simply a joy to work with in EEE.

Here is a list of some of the events EEE is so grateful for:

  1. February 16th-19th, 2012: The chance to bring back one of EEE’s favorites “Reeling over Love,” now revamped to a full length production, with the additional, touching new compositions by and performed live by Brian Erickson
  2.  The year of welcoming new EEE dancers and guest performers: Brian Evans, Jordan Klitzke, Joe Crook and Jarod Boltjes
  3. Honored to receive the MRAC Arts Learning grant for our 2012 EEE Outreach Season where we taught workshops at East Side Services, Luxton Community Center, Priarie School of Dance, 4th Street Dance Center in White Bear Lake, Saint Paul City Ballet, Tonka Dance Works, 3rd Annual EEE Jazz Intensive at Zenon and a 2 week Workshop and Main Street School of Performing Arts.
  4. March 13th, 2012: the incredible opportunity to perform new works with two of Saint Thomas’ choirs for their Sacred Arts Performance. How moving it was to watch the pieces as hundreds of beautiful voices filled the room.
  5. April 21st, 2012: A Very Grimm Promm; EEE’s Annual Fundraiser. Much success was brought with food, games, dancing, live music, photos and all of those fun costumes. Thank you to everyone who was able to come out and support EEE.
  6. Early summer Heidi Draskoci Johnson approached me stating that she would love to get involved with EEE and assist me on the admin end. She started out writing grants for us, and over a couple of months has now become our Managing Director. She has been such a pivotal new member to the EEE family, and I could not be more grateful to have her on board!
  7. June 17th-20th, 2012: Jazz Symposium at SMU in Dallas. Danny Buraczeski, one of my biggest mentors and who started my love of jazz dance, hosted a 3 day Jazz Symposium at SMU. A few members of EEE (Heather, Erinn, Megan and Jordan) were able to come with me to participate in the workshop. We had a blast dancing together! I was honored when Danny asked me if I would teach one of the jazz technique classes. That was a full circle, moving moment for me!
  8. July 19th-22nd, 2012: A Grimm Tale at the Ritz. EEE once again teamed up with Mad Munchkin Productions in creating an eerie, striking new piece that tied a bunch of Grimm Tales together. I was astonished at what we were able to create, and awe struck at the talents of MMP! My good friend, Kristin Grohs Blatzheim also created a breath taking new piece on EEE dancers.
  9. August 6th-12th, 2012: EEE’s 3rd Annual Jazz Intensive at Zenon. We had an incredible turnout of dancers for both our professional and dance educators track. It was a fantastic week of jazz dancing, and I am honored to produce this workshop with Karla Grotting every year! This has always been a staple I have wanted for EEE.
  10. October 2012: EEE’s 10th Anniversary Concert (July 18th-22nd, 2013) enters rehearsals. This production is all about honoring some of the incredible collaborations we have been fortunate to have with 4 amazing composers. We will be working again with Warren Park, Brian Erickson, Michael Rossetto and Richard Sloss. We will be bringing back older pieces and creating new ones.
  11. November 2012: an inspiring 2 week workshop working with the students of Main Street School of Performing Arts. EEE Teaching Artists Crystal, Mackenzie and Heather taught different jazz classes to their morning classes, and then we set “Big Noise” on their Intermediate and Advanced Dancers.
  12. Give to the Max. EEE set a goal of raising $3,000 ($1,000 more than last year), and we not only made it, we past it! Thank you to all of EEE’s supporters! We can not do it without you!
  13. Completely blown away and honored to receive 2 grants from MRAC! A Community Arts Grant to support or 10th Anniversary Show and a Development Grant to hire a financial consultant/director that will help us create our 3 and 5 year business plan and apply for our 501c3! This is a huge step for EEE, and we are ready!
  14. And lastly the 15 members of EEE that are all so busy with everything else going on in their lives, but still make EEE such a priority. Show up to every rehearsal with huge smiles on their faces, ready to work and sweat together. There is no one else I would prefer to be in the studio with, and can not tell you enough how much each and everyone of you means to me. Whether you have been with the company for 1-7 years, your loyalty, talent and incredible energy fills my heart!

So the list is long, but some things need to stated! Thank you 2012, and cheers to a fabulous 2013!

Karis Sloss

Artistic Director of Eclectic Edge Ensemble

Thank You MRAC!

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

Recently, Eclectic Edge Ensemble was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council for Organizational Development!  This funding will allow EEE to spend the next 9 months working with an independent consultant to develop a strong three, five and ten year plan to help insure longevity for EEE.  We will also (finally) have the resources we need to apply for non-profit and tax excempt status through the state and federal governments.  We couldn't be more thrilled!  What a great start to the Holiday Season!

Give to the MAX on Thursday, Nov. 15th!

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

Dear EEE Fans, Friends and Followers,

“Give to the Max” day is just around the corner, set to take place this coming Thursday, November 15!  This annual day of giving provides donors like you the opportunity to show your financial support for your top non-profits in the State of Minnesota.  Eclectic Edge Ensemble is participating again this year (through our fiscal sponsorship with Springboard for the Arts) and we HOPE you will consider giving to our company.  A few basics:

1)     “Give to the Max” is an ALL DAY event (midnight to midnight)!

2)     Giving is EASY!  Just visit our GiveMN.org webpage and click on the green “DONATE” button: http://givemn.razoo.com/story/Eclecticedgeensemble

3)     You will automatically be sent tax receipts from GiveMN.org to document your donation

And now for the juicy details:

Springboard for the Arts, our fiscal sponsor, has presented us with a matching donation challenge.  During the 10 am -11 am hour of giving (our “power hour”) Springboard has agreed to set aside $8,000 for matching donations! What does this mean?  This means that all Incubator organizations (groups that are currently fiscal sponsors of Springboard) will have the opportunity to compete for matching funds from Springboard based on the amount of money they raise during the power hour.  All donations made to Incubator clients (this includes us!) will be tallied during that hour and Springboard will divide the $8,000 proportionally amongst projects based on dollars raised.

Truth be told, we will be THRILLED to receive any amount of donation from you, your family, your friends, your neighbors… but if you are able to give to EEE during the power hour, your donation will go that much further!

Another incentive:

Springboard with put aside an additional $2,000 to use as reward money for the top 5 Incubator projects.  This money will be distributed not based on the amount of money raised, but by the number of donors contributing to the cause.  So it doesn’t really matter if $10.00 is all you have to give: this small donation will put EEE in the running for a $750 first place prize; $500 second place prize; $350 third place; $250 fourth; and $150 fifth.  Any small gift can/will make a difference for EEE!

If you’re receiving this email, it’s because you’ve already shown an incredible amount of support for our company by attending performances, volunteering, donating: we simply cannot thank you enough for everything you’ve done thus far.  As EEE celebrates our 10-year Anniversary, we hope that you will continue to show your generous support and consider making EEE a part of your year-end giving plan.

Please visit our GiveMN.org page (http://givemn.razoo.com/story/Eclecticedgeensemble) and remember to Give to the Max!

Many thanks.

EEE Staff and Company

Keep Your Fingers Crossed!

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

EEE just recently submitted two seperate proposals to the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC) in hopes of receiving grant support for some major projects coming up.  For one, as you all know, EEE is celebrating its 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY in 2013 and will be presenting both new and old works at the Ritz Theatre in July.  Artistic Director, Karis Sloss, will be working with four local composers in the restaging and creation of these pieces.  Leave it Karis to take on a challenge of this proportion!  We're hoping MRAC will be as excited about this concert as we are!

Two, EEE is really planning for the long term future and is hoping to receive funding from MRAC to support our next big step: incorporating as a non-profit, 501c3 organization by the end of our fiscal year, in addition to doing some long term strategic planning for the company and taking on more adminstrative staff.

Keep your fingers crossed, EEE fans!  This year will be a HUGE year for Eclectic Edge!

Halloween Costume Ideas!

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

When it comes to Halloween costumes, I become the queen of procrastination!  I am always the lame person who comes dressed as a ghost wearing my latest white linens.  For those of you just like me, take a look at Martha Stewart’s ideas for costumes.  Maybe you will feel inspired to actually make or buy a costume before October, 31st.  Some of these are really cool!  Enjoy.  ~Megan

EEE Out and About

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

Starting the week of November 5th, EEE will begin outreach workshops with Main Street School of Performing Arts. Although we love producing jazz shows in the Twin Cities, Eclectic Edge Ensemble is also devoted to outreach within our local dance community and in schools all over the metro area. We are proud to be a part of arts education at Main Street School of Performing Arts.

Main Street School of Performing Arts is a tuition free public charter school for grades 9 through 12, sponsored by the University of St. Thomas, conveniently located in the heart of Hopkins. MSSPA is open to all high school students throughout the metro area and offers students an integrated program of superior academic standards and an arts-focused education. MSSPA's meets all graduation requirement of the State of Minnesota and offers Advanced Placement classes in all academic areas. MSSPA also presents students with beginning through advanced level classes in Music, Theatre and Dance not offered at all public high schools. Main Street School of Performing Arts offers smaller class sizes, greater personal attention from fully licensed instructors, guidance and counseling, special education and the fullest production schedule of any four year Arts High School in the Twin Cities.

Gruesome Endings...

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

Fairy tales of the past were often full of macabre and gruesome twists and endings. These days, companies like Disney have sanitized them for a modern audience so we see happy endings everywhere. In light of EEE and Mad Munchkin’s “Grimm,” I thought it might be interesting to take a look at the original gruesome endings a couple of our beloved fairy tales held.

Little Red Riding Hood The version of this tale that most of us are familiar with ends with Riding Hood being saved by the woodsman who kills the wicked wolf. But in fact, the original French version (by Charles Perrault) of the tale was not quite so nice. In this version, the little girl is a well bred young lady who is given false instructions by the wolf when she asks the way to her grandmothers. Foolishly riding hood takes the advice of the wolf and ends up being eaten. And here the story ends. There is no woodsman – no grandmother – just a fat wolf and a dead Red Riding Hood. The moral to this story is to not take advice from strangers.

Snow White In the tale of Snow White that we are all familiar with, the Queen asks a huntsman to kill her and bring her heart back as proof. Instead, the huntsman can’t bring himself to do it and returns with the heart of a boar. in the original tale, the Queen actually asks for Snow White’s liver and lungs – which are to be served for dinner that night! Also in the original, Snow White wakes up when she is jostled by the prince’s horse as he carries her back to his castle – not from a magical kiss. In the Grimm version, the tale ends with the Queen being forced to dance to death in red hot iron shoes!

Cinderella In the modern Cinderella fairy tale we have the beautiful Cinderella swept off her feet by the prince and her wicked step sisters marrying two lords – with everyone living happily ever after. The fairy tale has its origins way back in the 1st century BC where Strabo’s heroine was actually called Rhodopis, not Cinderella. The story was very similar to the modern one with the exception of the glass slippers and pumpkin coach. But, lurking behind the pretty tale is a more sinister variation by the Grimm brothers: in this version, the nasty step-sisters cut off parts of their own feet in order to fit them into the glass slipper – hoping to fool the prince. The prince is alerted to the trickery by two pigeons who peck out the step sister’s eyes. They end up spending the rest of their lives as blind beggars while Cinderella gets to lounge about in luxury at the prince’s castle.

Come to the Ritz Theatre July 19-22, 2012 to see our interpretation of some of these beloved classics – I promise there won’t being any missing appendages.

Healthy Banana Ice Cream

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

Summer has arrived!  With highs in the 90's everyday this week, we will all be looking for ways to cool off.
.
One of my favorite summertime treats on a hot day is ice cream. (I'm going to bet that I'm not alone in this!)  A healthier alternative that is just as tasty is making ice cream out of bananas!  Its super easy and tasty, and offers more nutrients than the dairy version.
.
Ingredients:
-very ripe bananas (the more ripe they are, the sweeter they taste)
-food processor or high speed blender
.
optional:
blueberries, strawberries, cocoa, peanut butter, etc.
.
Directions:
Place bananas and any other ingredients you'd like to experiment with in the food processor or blender. Whip until the consistency is soft and creamy. Place into a bowl or container and freeze. Eat and enjoy!

EEE Embellishes Educational Elements!

Eclectic Edge Ensemble

This June 17-20th, Artistic Director Karis Sloss and several members of the EEE company will be traveling down to Dallas, Texas to participate in a symposium on teaching jazz dance at Southern Methodist University. The symposium is being hosted by Danny Buraczeski, former Artistic Director of famed Twin Cities company JAZZDANCE, now a faculty member at SMU. Buraczeski has gathered jazz dance performers, choreographers and teachers from across the country to give them a chance to network and exchange ideas.
